To check if a word is Old Norse, try this link: http://www.m-w.com. (Type your word in the Dictionary bar, press Look it up and check the Etymology.) Most printed dictionaries have this information too. However you will notice that different dictionaries sometimes have different information. When words have been used for hundreds of years it is not always easy to work out where they come from! In fact, there are probably more words on page 112 that were used by the Vikings. There were other people called Jutes, Angles and Saxons who invaded England, Scotland and Ireland before the time of the Vikings. These people also came from Scandinavia (and Germany) and they spoke a language similar to the Vikings. Many words described in dictionaries as 'Old English' and 'Scots' were brought by these people, and they often sound the same as Viking words. |
